Robyn and Stanley's DIY Letterpress Invitations
Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 10:29AM I am so excited to feature DIY Invitations for Robyn and Stanley's upcoming wedding!!! First and foremost, congrats you two - for a fabulously stylish job on designing your own invitations and for your upcoming nuptials! {Stanley and I went to High School together so we go waaay back and I'm so thrilled about his engagement and upcoming marriage!}
The two are really into photography and you can see it in their wedding logo - a chic sketch of two SLR cameras and the cutest thing of all - their monogram is SLR!
Here's Robyn's take on how the two lovebirds created their invitations:
"I really wanted something simple, modern, elegant, eco-friendly and that represented both of our personalities and design aesthetics. We needed to make 150 invites, and had a budget of $500 that we were determined to stick to. Additionally, I fell in love with letterpress and dared to hope that this could happen.In adobe element, Stanley created the graphic element of a line drawing of a city skyline combining Seattle (where I am from), San Francisco (our home for the past 8 years) and New York (where he is from and where we met). I chose a clean, modern font (copperplate light) for the body text and downloaded a free script font (champingon) from dafont.com for our names to add a softer, more feminine element. We researched and visited two local letterpress printers: both printers (mercurio brothers in Berkeley and dependable letterpress in sf) were relatively affordable because we were responsible for submitting the design. We spoke with Joel, the owner of dependable letterpress. i think that he prices individually by the job, depending on the paper, and by the complexity of the printing and design. We basically gave him our budget and asked him what he could do with it. for 150 single sided 5x7 invites, outer envelope, 4-bar reply cards, and unprinted 4-bar reply envelopes, it came in just under $500 including tax. Mercurio brothers was also reasonably priced, but we really liked the individual attention and flexibility at dependable--we knew that we were in good hands.
The day that we received the pretty boxes, all tied up with string was just like Christmas!! It was so rewarding to see, feel and hold the finished invitation. We added splashes of color by brushing a red pigment-based ink along the edges, pasting in a red envelope liner, and finally by stamping the Chinese character for double happiness on the flap of the reply envelope. We're both really happy to have an invitation that is modern, personally and culturally meaningful, and totally represents us as a couple."
Without further ado:

Stumble It!

I love the skyline!! What an amazing and personal invitation.
I love how you guys use the skylines of SF, NY and Seattle to tell the story of yourselves and your relationship. This is a one of a kind invitation that only you could make yourself. I am a wedding planner, crafter and scrapbooker and I have found that when you personalize your wedding with touches like this it means so much to the guests and to the couple in the long run.
Thanks so much for your sweet comments! :) It was a labor of love--intense, but so fun and extremely rewarding.
